As we pull into 2014 in full force, we here at Golden Road are excited to announce a special collaboration beer that will only be available in the United Kingdom. This week, our brewmaster Jesse Houck and Three Weavers brewmaster Alexandra Nowell are brewing a California Session IPA at Banks’s Beer in Wolverhampton as part of a series bringing in American craft brewers to the UK. We were invited to participate at the suggestion of our friend Mitch Steele, brewmaster at Stone Brewing Company, which will put us on a roster of American breweries including Terrapin, Stone, Ninkasi, and 21st Amendment just to name a few.
So what are Jesse and Alex brewing across the pond? They teamed up on a recipe for what Jesse calls one of his favorite styles to brew: a sessionable low ABV India Pale Ale brewed in that hop-forward west coast-style we all know and love.
Over the course of two days, they brewed four batches-- a total of 400 bbls -- to be casked and distributed exclusively to 850 JD Weatherspoon brew pubs.
We caught up with Jesse before he hopped on his New Year’s Eve flight to London and found out a little more about what he and Alex had up their sleeves. The grain bill for this beer will showcase all English grains-- a heritage varietal of Pale malt, some light crystal, and malted wheat. The hops is where they do their magic. Utilizing centennial for bittering and adding El Dorado, Mosaic, Centennial, and Amarillo at the end of whirlpool. Finally dry-hopping with El Dorado, Mosaic, Centennial, and Citra. The finished product being a not-too-aggressive, but still assertively hoppy west coast IPA with a beautiful light color to send a little California sunshine their way.

We are honored to have been invited to be part of the American Craft Brewer’s Showcase spearheaded by Naked Brands. Stay tuned for more from across the pond! Special thanks to Alexandra Nowell for keeping us up to date with photos on their trip.
